TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. The unit sends out mild electrical impulses that stimulate the nerves where the electrodes are placed – most often on the lower back during labour, but they can also be used on other areas of the body if needed.
Research suggests that TENS may relieve pain in several ways:
Low intensity: At a low setting, TENS works through the Gate Control Theory. The brain can only process a limited amount of signals at once. By sending a steady stream of mild impulses, TENS “fills the gate,” reducing how strongly contractions are perceived.
High intensity: At a higher setting, TENS may activate the body’s own pain-relief system, known as Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Control. This leads to the release of endorphins – the body’s natural pain-relieving hormones – similar to your body’s own morphine supply.
Additionally, TENS may reduce anxiety, increase a sense of control, and provide distraction from contractions, making the pain easier to manage.
